Akwa United are still without a win this season as they played out a goalless draw against defending champions Rangers international in front of their irate fans at the Nest of champions, Uyo on Wednesday.
The Promise keepers coached by Abdu Maikaba had total control of the game from start to finish but were unable to convert the numerous goal scoring opportunities they created in the game thereby dropping two precious points yet again at home.
Ifeanyi Ifeanyi had the first attempt at goal in the sixth minute after a cagey opening when he stylishly fired a free kick directly at goal from 25 yards forcing Olufemi Kayode in goal for Akwa to a save. A minute later, Christian Pyagbara was through on goal but he was too slow to pick his spot giving Orji Kalu ample time to recover to make good tackle.
The flying antelopes did not just sit back as they turned defense to attack occasionally. They broke quickly on the 19th minute when Godwin released Bobby Clement with a long range pass which Clement did well to chase down before squaring across the opponent's box. Fortune Omoniwari was rushing forward for an easy tap-in but a well timed tackle from Chigozie Chilekwu saved the blushes for the homers.
Further opportunities came the way of Akwa United but their attackers were shy at goal with Moses Ebiye the biggest culprit of the game. Goalkeeper of Rangers Nana Bonsu was also at his best as he made saves from Ebiye, Cyril Olisema and Ifeanyi Ifeanyi.
The first half finished all squared and Maikaba shuffled his side in the second bringing on hard fighting Kufre Ebong and Babangida Hassan but proceedings remained same as his lads found it difficult to break down Rangers.
Imama Amapakabo brought on Charles Henlong to add bodies to the midfield to quell the pressure from the host and also Tope Olusesi came on to see if he could steal all three points towards the end but both sides cancelled each other out to share the spoils.
Akwa United will travel up north to face Katsina United while the flying antelopes will welcome Niger Tornadoes in match day 5 of the Nigerian Professional Football League.
